| Munakata taisha enshrines three goddesses belonging to Amaterasu-Ohmikami the god. The names of three goddesses are Tagorino-himekami, enshrined in Okitsu-Miya shrine in Okinoshima island, Tagitsu-himekami, enshrined in Nakatsu-Miya shrine in Chikuzen Ohshima, and Ichikishima-himekami, in Hetsu-Miya shrine in Genkaicho Tashima. The Munakata taisha consists of three these three shrines.
The region of Munakata is close to Chinese continent and Korean peninsula and was important as a port of trade and for importing culture. It is described in "Nihon Shoki", the oldest book of history in Japan, that Amaterasu-Ohmikami the god assigned the these three goddesses became enshrined here in Munakata.
The Okinoshima island, where Okitsu-Miya shrine is, is in the center of Genkainada sea that is between the Kyushu and Korean peninsula. This island is the island of god and visitors must follow the ancient custom. Females are not allowed to go to this island. There are approximately one hundred twenty thousand ancient divine treasures were excavated (like mirrors, rings made from gold, magatama accessories, and so on), and they have all been designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. These treasures are obtained to pray for the goddess for the prosperity of the country and the safety of the traffic on the sea. Due to the superior quality and enormous quantity of the findings, Okinoshima island has been called "Shousouin on the ocean" (Shousouin is the biggest ancient historical building of treasure storage that has thousand of treasures). Many treasures are belong to Okitsu-Miya shrine are on exhibition at Hetsu-Miya in Shinpo-kan, open to public. |
